Canada’s national newspaper, the Global Post
reported on Thursday that
Canadian Conservative Party leader Scheer
has dual citizenship in Canada and the United States.
The Globe and Mail said that
Scheer’s father was born in the United States
so Scheer has US citizenship
Scheer’s mother is a Canadian citizen
so Scheer was born with dual citizenship
in Canada and the United States.
Canadian Conservative Party spokesman Daniel Schow
confirmed on Thursday that Scheer has
dual citizenship in Canada and the United States
but stressed that Scheer has decided to abandon US citizenship
after being elected as a Conservative leader
This procedure has started in August this year
and is currently awaiting The US government to confirm
the official documents that his US citizenship was cancelled.
The US Embassy in Canada generally takes
9 to 10 months to complete the approval process
for Canadian citizens to cancel US citizenship applications
The Conservative spokesperson pointed out that
Scheer and his sister, like thousands of Canadians
automatically acquired US citizenship
because one of their parents was a US citizen
Scheer did not update his US passport when he was an adult
Nor have they participated in any election voting in the United States.
In Halifax’s answer to a reporter’s question
about his dual citizenship status
he said that he never tried to cover up the fact that
he had dual citizenship status in Canada and the United States
so he did not openly talk about this
because the media never asked him this question
Canadian Liberal Party spokesperson Zita Astravas
accused Schell not telling Canadian voters that
his dual citizenship status reflects his dishonesty
According to a survey by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
44 members of the House of Representatives and 12 senators
in Canada’s current federal parliament were born in foreign countries
at least 22 of whom have the nationality of another country
in addition to Canadian citizenship.
