More and more people in Canada are beginning to realize that
the use of single-use mineral water bottles is harmful to the environment.
They are trying to reduce the purchase of bottled water
and try to bring their own reusable water cups.
But not everyone does this in all cases.
Some bottled water companies in Canada are learning from the experience
of large companies such as Coca-Cola and Pepsi,
and educating consumers and establishing recycling systems
to recycle mineral water plastic bottles.
In fact, several bottled water companies in Canada have been using
100% recycled plastic bottles a few years ago.
For example, Naya Bottled Water Company,
located in Mirabel, Quebec,
has been using recycled plastic bottles since 2009,
（Ice River Springs）自2010年以来
and Ice River Springs, based in Shelburne, Ontario,
has been using plastic bottles since 2010.
The main reason why bottled water companies are reluctant
to use recyclable plastics is that they are more expensive.
This was also a challenge for Glacier Mineral Water Company,
but the manager said that
they found a solution:
“We started making it ourselves.”
The company started a subsidiary called
“蓝山塑料”（Blue Mountain Plastics）的子公司
Blue Mountain Plastics,
which buys 29,000 tons of plastic annually from a municipal recycling program,
processes it and turns it into recycled plastic flakes,
bottles and box containers.
The recycled PET is used to make mineral water bottles.
The recycled bottle caps are made into plastic chairs.
According to the company’s estimates,
the use of recycled plastic can reduce the energy required
to produce a bottle of mineral water by 70%
and the water consumption by 99%.
The next step for some beverage companies
is to increase the use of recycled plastic.
Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Nestle’s beverage bottles
now use less than 12% recycled plastic.
Another is to increase the recycling rate
of plastic water bottles through publicity and education.
According to 2017 data,
the recovery rate at the scrap level is only about 29% in North America.
