Canada: A Winner in the 2021 International Junior Science Olympiad
The International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) is an annual science competition for students aged 16 and under. It is one of the top twelve International Science Olympiads, and the only one that covers Physics, Chemistry and Biology at the same time. The test questions and laboratory examinations may cover Third Year University level syllabus.
The prestigious IJSO is usually held annually in December. Teams comprising up to 6 High School Students, come from all over the world.
The main purpose of this competition is to encourage, at the international level, outstanding young students to pursue scientific careers; to discover and cultivate their talents and potentials in the field of natural sciences.
The 18th IJSO hosted by the United Arab Emirate ended on December 22, 2021. The Canadian Team performed outstandingly and won 1 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze medals. Canada is the only Western country amongst the 9 gold medalists. Once again this proved to the world the advantages of Canada’s Multicultural Educational System. With the dedicated guidance of teachers, and the unremitting efforts of the students, the Canadian IJSO Team, did Canadians proud. Winning so many medals against tough international competition is quite an achievement. Let us cheer them on.
Despite the Pandemic, amongst the 5 medalists are two from the “TOPS@MGCI” Public School Program, which has garnered numerous awards and honours in its over 30 years history. Parents and students can be confident that the Public School System is fully capable of delivering top education and training, even during the COVID-19 crisis. The Public Education System ensures that every student can receive the education that they deserve. In the process of equal access reform, we must maintain high standards, nurture the innate talents of students, and ensure that tax-payers monies are well spent. Keep Canada in the forefront of science, technology and innovation.
Congratulations again to all teachers and students of the Canadian IJSO team. Well done!
